Drier Zone
Rainfall here is less than 80 cms annually
- Rayalaseema region basically consist of 7 districts – Anantapur, Kadapa, Kurnool, Nandyala, Chittoor, Annamayya and Sathya Sai which see less rainfall which is less than 70 cms annually. But if you go South-Easterly, the rainfall increases exponentially towards Tirupati – Nellore coasts. Part of Prakasam and North-West Nellore district also comes in this zone.
- Majority of Rainfall (around 70-80%) happens during South-West Monsoon (June to September) and remaining 20-30% happens during North East Monsoon and Winter / Summer seasons.
- Kurnool, Nandyala and Chittoor districts usually get more rain compared to other areas of Rayalaseema.
- There are certain years where severe drought happens when rainfall records very poor.
Rainy Zone
Rainfall here is between 80-110 cms annually
- Almost all districts : Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, Parvathipuram Manyam, Visakhapatnam, Anakapalli, Kakinada, Konaseema, Ubhaya Godavari, NTR (Vijayawada), Eluru, Krishna, Guntur, Palnadu, Nellore districts fall under this zone.
- Majority of Rainfall (around 50-60%) happens during South-West Monsoon but a portion of 30-40% happens during North-East Monsoon. Remaining happens during Summer / Winter seasons.
- Seasonally Cyclones batter the coast more often in October to December and also ocassionally during May month.
- Parvathipuram, Kakinada, Konaseema gets more rain than rest of the districts due to regular Monsoon Lows passing through this are during South-West Monsoon.
Extreme Rainfall Zone
Rainfall here is between 110-170 cms annually
- Only Alluri Seetharamaraju and Tirupati district fall under this category.
- Alluri Seetharamarju district gets 70-80% rainfall during South-West Monsoon but only 5% during North-East Monsoon and the rest 15% in Winter / Summer.
- While Tirupati district gets a bulk rainfall out of North-East Monsoon (October to December) which is around 70% and remaining 20-30% during South-West Monsoon and rest 0-10% in Summer / Winter transitions.
- Both the regions get regular floods during their respective peak seasons, but Tirupati district coastline is more prone to Cyclones during North-East Monsoon season.
