Sat. Dec 21st, 2024

The ongoing spell of Moderate rains at Visakhapatnam and also Uttarandhra had shifted to Odisha and this will also reduce as the system is moving away from our coastal region. Only few parts of Vizianagaram district recorded heavy rainfall during last 24 hours. The map below will clearly explain you about the rainfall spread during last 24 hours in Andhra Pradesh.

Next set of Rains to Coastal Andhra Pradesh ?

The next set of rains for South Coastal Andhra Pradesh and parts of Rayalaseema might be commencing from Christmas day (December 25th onwards) where Tirupati – Nellore – Prakasam might get a spell of good rains till December 27th. The December 25-26th we can have the rains due to the remnants of the ongoing depression in Bay of Bengal. Tirupati city and the district will remain in the top list from the upcoming rain spell.

Tirupati’s leading trend in rainfall continues across 2024 due to a successful North-east Monsoon season

AP Rainfall Toppers (2024) from Jan 1,2024 to Dec 21,2024 :
=========
Tirupati (city) 160 cms
Narsapuram 145 cms
Nandigama 136 cms
Visakhapatnam (city) 133 cms
Machilipatnam 130 cms
Kalingapatnam 124 cms
Kavali 123 cms
Tuni 123 cms
Nellore 120 cms
Vijayawada 120 cms
Kakinada 119 cms
Ongole 109 cms
Bapatla 103 cms

Last year Tirupati was 142 cms and this year it came upto 160 cms. The rainfall pattern had improved a lot from 2020 onwards to till date. Can be attributed continuously successful North-east Monsoon seasons which brings around 60-65% of annual rainfall to city. Almost all the dams in Tirumala has been full this year, with few already overflowing. Unofficial rainfall numbers of Tirumala (Annual) was upto 2009 mm (201 cms) till date as on December 21st from January 1, 2024. With upcoming rains, this number can go even heigher.

North-east Monsoon extension into January ?

Looks like North-east Monsoon can be extended to January also as the easterlies continue to give rains over South Peninsular India even though MJO is not favouring us but solely due to near-Lanina conditions that are ongoing in Pacific. There would be train of small or medium low pressures affecting Sri Lanka which can sprinkle some rains along South Coastal Andhra Pradesh. If there are larger Westerly troughs that dip from Himalayan region to south india, we can expect some extreme rainfall all over coastal AP. Otherwise normally South Coastal AP.
